How Often Should I Get Reiki?

A common question that reiki clients have following their first session is, “When should I come back?”

The answer depends on the person, what you’re experiencing in life right now, and what your intentions are when receiving reiki. All of this means that the frequency you receive a healing session changes from time to time and person to person. A good guideline is to treat it similar to how most of us treat a massage. Read on for a few scenarios that illustrate what I mean.

You’re going through a big transition or want to heal an ongoing problem

If you experience an injury or persistent tension in a certain part of the body, you might benefit from a few massages in short succession, right? Energy healing works the same way on the mental/emotional/spiritual level. Often when people have a specific transition or pain they want addressed with reiki, we can address it in one session. Other times, it’s helpful to receive two to three sessions with just a week to a few weeks in between.

Examples of this kind of situation would be:

  • Relationship issues: One of the most common reasons new clients come to me is for cord clearings. This is when we clear old energy and ties to people you’ve been in a relationship with. The goal may be to move on from the relationship, or it may be to improve an existing one. (You can read more about that here.)

  • Past abuse and trauma: Sometimes people find reiki to be a helpful support if they are going through or have gone through therapy to recover from past trauma and abuse. Of course, reiki does not replace trauma therapy. But it can help to facilitate relaxation, which benefits the nervous system that has been holding trauma. It also encourages the body and aura to release old memories and patterns so they don’t linger.

  • Career transitions: If you’re having trouble feeling clear on your career, or you want support as you face a new and unknown path, energy healing can be a great tool. During the session(s), we can set the intention that the healing will make you feel clear, supported, and centered through this kind of change. It’s also not uncommon for the client or the healer to receive insights through the client’s higher self during a session. These can help the client make decisions or feel more confident about the ones they’ve already made.

  • Physical injury recovery: Reiki benefits the body as well as the mind and spirit. Consider scheduling to help speed healing from an injury or illness.

These are just a few examples of the kinds of scenarios that lead clients to seek just one session, or two to three sessions in a short time. After clients receive their first session for a specific intention like these, I encourage them to use their own intuition and sense of their well-being to guide them in deciding whether and when to receive another.

General health and maintenance

Individuals who want reiki to support their general health and well-being will usually receive reiki anywhere between once a month to just two or three times per year. More energetically sensitive folks will benefit from monthly healings if it’s in their budget. As a healer, for example, I know that I’m pretty energetically sensitive and need to receive an energy healing from another healer approximately once per month to keep myself feeling clear and healthy. As much as I can, I plan for that in my schedule and budget.

(If budget is a concern for you, I recommend joining the Soul’s Mission Energy Healing email list here. First, you’ll receive a link right away to a free, short video-based on-demand reiki session that you can use any time. You’ll also be alerted when I offer occasional discounts on sessions. And don’t forget about 30-for-30 Saturdays! The third Saturday of the month, I offer a limited number of 30-minute sessions for just $30.)

For fun or as a treat!

Things can get kind of serious when we’re talking about energy healing, can’t they? Since most people arrive to reiki because they’re looking for solutions to their pain, we sometimes forget: Reiki feels good and can be just for fun. You can schedule just because you want to treat yourself or have a break in the routine.
